An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.9 struck off Kagoshima Prefecture, southwestern Japan, on Wednesday, the country's weather agency said.
The temblor occurred at 11:46 p.m. local time at a depth of 50 km, measuring upper 5 on Japan's seismic scale of 7 in the hardest-hit areas in the southwestern island region of Amami in Kagoshima Prefecture, said the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
The quake's epicenter was located near Okinawa Main Island at a latitude of 27.5 degrees north and a longitude of 128.6 degrees east.
No tsunami warning was issued, according to the JMA.
