Flight operations at Germany's Munich Airport are gradually resuming after a smell of smoke in the control tower prompted a temporary suspension of flights on Sunday evening, airport officials said.

A spokesperson for the airport operator said flights had begun departing again, although delays and disruptions remained possible.

The control tower was evacuated at 8:33 p.m. local time (1833 GMT) after air traffic controllers detected a smell of smoke. Flight operations were subsequently suspended.

Officials said no open flames had been observed and it remained unclear whether a fire had occurred.

According to the German Press Agency (dpa), flights resumed about two hours after the evacuation.

It was not immediately clear how many flights had been affected. According to the airport's online flight schedule, some arrivals and departures were delayed, while numerous inbound flights were diverted.
