A domestically developed traction asynchronous motor for Russia's high-speed trains has passed acceptance tests and matches leading global counterparts in operational and energy performance, Russian Railways said Monday on its Telegram channel.
The tests were conducted at Russian Electric Motors' plant in the western city of Chelyabinsk. The new TAD-650 motor has a rated power of 650 kw, efficiency of up to 96 percent, and a compact design weighing 750 kg.
Ural Locomotives is building the new high-speed trains. Test runs of the first train sets are planned for autumn 2027 on a pilot high-speed section in West Russia.
Russia's first high-speed railway linking Moscow and St. Petersburg is expected to be fully commissioned in 2028, cutting travel time to about two hours and 15 minutes.
