China's consumer price index, the main gauge of inflation, fell by 0.1 percent year-on-year in March after a 0.7 percent drop in February, according to the Chinese National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The bureau attributed the improvement to the impact of the policies aimed at boosting consumer demand that started to take effect.

The growth in core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, rose by 0.5 percent year-on-year in March after a 0.1 percent dip in February, Dong Lijuan, an NBS statistician said.

Month-on-month, the CPI dipped 0.4 percent in March.
