A fire broke out late Friday evening at the historic mosque/cathedral in the southern Spanish city of Cordoba and was successfully extinguished, local media reported.
No casualties or individuals trapped were reported in the blaze, according to Spanish broadcaster Cadena SER, which also confirmed that a section of the site was affected by the fire.
The blaze was sparked by a short circuit in the battery of an automatic sweeper while it was in operation, Cadena SER said. The fire broke out around 9:15 p.m. local time and rapidly spread from the interior to the roof.
Flames were visible from various locations across the city, producing a large column of smoke that alarmed residents and tourists alike.
Cordoba, located in the Andalusia region, is renowned for the UNESCO World Heritage Site, designated in 1984. It drew around two million visitors in 2024.
