The UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution aimed at strengthening accountability for attacks against United Nations peacekeeping personnel amid growing concerns over rising violence targeting peacekeepers and limited prosecution of those responsible.

The resolution, drafted by Denmark and Pakistan and co-sponsored by 152 countries, follows a series of deadly attacks on UN personnel, including incidents that killed seven members of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

The resolution urges host countries to take all necessary measures to investigate attacks against UN personnel and bring perpetrators to justice, stressing that impunity contributes to the recurrence of such crimes.

It reaffirms that host states bear primary responsibility for the safety and security of UN personnel and calls on all parties to fully cooperate with investigations.

In addition, it calls for an annual report on progress made in investigations and judicial proceedings related to attacks on peacekeeping personnel.

The Security Council stressed that attacks against UN peacekeepers may constitute war crimes and expressed its readiness to consider further measures to strengthen accountability.
