China supports Gulf countries in achieving genuine strategic autonomy and resolving differences through dialogue, China's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Fu Cong said Thursday.

"The Middle East, including the Gulf region, cannot once again become an arena for big-power rivalry or the victim of geopolitical games," said Fu at an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council following an exchange of attacks between the United States and Iran.

China supports regional countries in pursuing strategic autonomy, upholding a common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security concept, and exploring a new regional security architecture through dialogue and consultations, he said.

Fu called for a comprehensive ceasefire and urged the United States and Iran to implement their memorandum of understanding in good faith, maintain the momentum of negotiations and work toward a comprehensive agreement accepted by the parties concerned, regional countries and the international community.

He also called for an early restoration of normal navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, saying free and safe passage is essential to the stability of global production and supply chains.

Any arrangements concerning the strait should respect the sovereignty and legitimate rights and interests of coastal countries while complying with international practice, he said.

Fu urged all parties to remain calm, exercise restraint and avoid actions that could further escalate tensions.

He called for respect for the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of regional countries, protection of civilians and non-military targets, and welcomed follow-up consultations between the United States and Iran aimed at advancing future negotiations.

Dialogue and negotiation remain the only viable way to resolve disputes, Fu said, adding that China stands ready to work with the international community to play a constructive role in promoting a political settlement of regional issues and maintaining peace and stability in the Middle East.
